FIFTEEN
They kept as king the same questions, reworded, rephrased, working patiently as weavers across the pattern of his evening with Susannah. Time seemed to obsess themâWhen had he picked her up at her apartment? Exactly what time had they walked out the door? How long had they spent dining at the Ultimate Perception? What time had they arrived at the beach-house party? When had they left? What was the last time Rees had looked at his watch?âon and on. âI keep telling you,â he said exhaustedly, âI canât say exactly. We werenât on any kind of schedule.â
âGet as near as you can.â
âBut why does it matter?â Rees asked the young detective, but.
It was Krug who answered. âJust take our word, it does.â
Hoisting a haunch onto the corner of the table nearest Rees, Krug fished in a breast pocket, producing a thin, narrow carton and opening the flap. âSmoke?â he offered.
âNo, thanks, I donât use cigars.â
âUn-hunh.â Krug glanced at his partner. âYou want to part with one of your gaspers, Casey?â
âSure, why not?â He offered a pack of Carltons, and Rees took one gratefully.
Krug lit it and his own small cigar with a kitchen match he snapped alight with his thumbnail. âOkay,â he said, puffing, âitâs about four, you think, maybe four-thirty this morning when you go to sleep, right? And sheâs tucked in there with you, no worries about getting home. So then what?â
âI donât know,â Rees said miserably. âShe seemed so happy. I canât believe anything was preying on her mind. It canât be suicide! She wasnâtââ
âMr. Rees,â Casey stopped him. âShe was an actress. And you said yourself you hardly knew her.â
âBut she wasnât that sort ofââ
âOkay, okay,â Krug interrupted, âletâs go on.â He blew a plume of smoke just over Reesâs head. âShe a good lay?â he asked softly. âKicky, maybe? Little whory?â
âGo to hell!â
âAh come on, fella, you only knew her the one day. Isnât as if she was your steady.â Krug hitched himself closer. âSo you ball maybe an hour at your place, right? Then you catch your breath and try some new tricks at her placeââ Rees kept shaking his head, but Krug went bulldozing on: âHow many times did you do it? Two? Three? Donât just sit there wagging your head, lover boy. Tell us what happened.â
âIâm trying to,â Rees said hoarsely, suppressing his rage. âI have told you.â He blinked at Krug dizzily, seeing him double for an instant. âLook, I donât know what youâre trying to get at with all this. I told you I was asleep when she left, so I donât know what happened.â He hesitated, but neither detective spoke. âYouâre right, I suppose,â he went on quietly. âI didnât know her at all. But I canât believe I couldnât have sensed it if she was troubled. Sensed something, anyway.â His voice cracked and he swallowed a lump. âWeâd had a lot to drink. And she couldnât see very well. She couldâve opened the window andâand lost her balanceââ But there was no response, and helpless, baffled, he gave up.
